While working with patients, I discovered one interesting fact that people who are involved in sports or activity complain more about problems in the thoracic or cervical spine. And people with a sedentary lifestyle face problems with discomfort in the lower back. The frame of our movement is located in the lower back of our vertebrae L5 – S1. More and more people are experiencing discomfort in the lumbar region.
Now let’s look at some statistics, let’s take two countries: Ukraine and the United States. Using the GoogleTrends resource, I analyzed what people type and ask on Google.
USA The first place is occupied by low back pain by a wide margin.
Ukraine Again, the same problem ranks first.
What causes lumbar pain most often? My personal statistics for 5 years of work
- Spasm of the quadratus lumborum muscle, which reduces the mobility of the lower back, which causes a block of movement and equals low blood circulation. Massage of the lumbar spine, the massage therapist should find a point that feels like a small ball and hold it gently for 5 seconds, 5-10 times, but before that, do a massage. You can find the problematic point yourself lying on the floor and put a tennis ball, massage ball, holding it for a couple of minutes on both sides.
- The iliopsoas muscle, which often spasms, contracts and causes pain. Massage, very often we can relax our lower back through the abdomen. This is often unpleasant and uncomfortable, but very effective. Do not forget that our internal organs are heavily spasmodic and need to be relieved and blood circulation improved.
- Piriformis muscle + sciatic nerve. Spasm of the piriformis muscle and insufficient blood circulation exclude sciatic nerve inflammation, and the pain can start from the lower back to the foot.
These are some of the most common causes of low back pain in my experience. Movement is what will save your back, your body, set a small goal like 5,000 or 10,000 steps a day. Add yoga, stretching, start getting massages, and it will keep you healthy.
